What you talk about in counselling is treated with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality. The counselling begins with a contract between you and the vcounsellor, and part of this is to treat what you disclose to as confidential.
There are, however, specific circumstances where there may be an ethical obligation to break confidentiality, specifically if obliged to do so by law or where there appears to be a significant risk of harm to yourself or others.
Additionally, as a professional your counsellor will undertake supervision with appropriately qualified individuals. The emphasis in supervision is on the work of the counsellor, and where any reference is made to their work with you, it will be presented anonymously and with care to omit identifying details. Counselling supervision is subject to the same strictures of confidentiality as is the counselling itself.
